Dismissing the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) demand, the provincial members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) have decided not to resign from their posts, a news channel claimed on Thursday.
A PTI delegation had earlier expressed confidence in the newly-appointed chief election commissioner but said that the party did not trust other members of the ECP. Opposition leader in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah also endorsed the PTI’s demand that the ECP members should resign.
According to the news channel, the ECP members are of the view that they were not involved in rigging in last year’s general elections and their resignations would prove that the rigging allegations were true.
The news channel quoted ECP members as saying that if any person has objection, he can move the Supreme Judicial Council, which they said is the only forum which can sack them. The ECP members further stated that PTI’s objections have no ‘constitutional basis’.
