Higher Education Commission (HEC’s) consultative meeting on health professional education and to discuss and formulate recommendations for standardization of quality education in medical profession was held here on Tuesday with Acting Executive Director, HEC Dr. Mansoor Akbar Kundi in chair.
During the meeting various issues and challenges confronting the medical education in the country came under discussion and it emphasized the need for strategic planning, involving all stakeholders, to address these critical issues.
Prof. Khaleequz Zaman, Chairman, Department of Medical Education and Department of Neurology, Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University, PIMS emphasized the need to develop policies based on ground realities, work in closer coordination with policy makers and advocate for changing the political mindset. “Various regulatory bodies should work in closer coordination and avoid going in to different directions,” he said.
Dr. Iqbal Memon, Professor and Head of Department, Anesthesia and Critical Care, PIMS recommended that paramedical staff should also be part of any health reform agenda. “Delivery of resources should be uniform across the country and preventive and focus should be given to community oriented health care.”
Maj. Gen. Dr. Viqar Ahmed Khan, Commandant, Armed Forces Postgraduate Medical Institute called for need to take collaborative actions for standardization of medical education and formation of national body with sub-committees working for improvement in different segments of healthcare.
Three sub committees were formed to work on recommendations for Curriculum Reforms, Quality Assurance and Service Structures, TTS Appointments and Supervision of Research Degrees.

Dr. Aamer Ikram, Consultant and Professor, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Prof. Dr. Altaf Ali G Sheikh, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Isra University, Mr. Nazim Uddin, Secretary Pharmacy Council, Prof M. Idrees Anwar, HoD Surgery, Rawalpindi Medical College, Dr. Umar Ali Khan, PVC, Isra University, Dr. Rukhsana Ayub, Al Nafees Medical College, Isra University, and Dr. Rukhsana Majid, Bolan Medical College.
