Govt submits report about CEC appointment in SC

Newly-appointed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (r) Sardar Raza Khan has summoned a meeting of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for today.

In the meeting, he will be briefed about the election reforms recommended by the Reforms Committee and preparations about the local governments elections in Sindh, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to sources, the CEC will also be briefed about the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members’ resignations, 18-month election tribunal performance and usage of biometric system in general elections.

The federal government has submitted a report in the Supreme Court regarding the appointment of the CEC.

It is expected that the three member bench of the court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Nasirul Mulk will dispose of the case today whereas Sindh and Punjab governments have also prepared the report about delimitations and will be submitting today (Monday).

The ECP has also consulted the issue of delimitations with the provincial governments.

Eight benches of the Supreme Court have been formed to hear cases during the week beginning today.

During the week, two important cases relating to local bodies elections and contempt petition against the prime minister would come up for hearing.

Bench one consists of CJP Nasirul Mulk, Justice Gulzar Ahmad and Justice Mushir Alam. Bench two comprises Justice Jawad S Khawaja and Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani and bench three will be headed by Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali.
