The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday once again directed the health department to launch an effective public awareness about Rubella and other measles and precautionary measures against them.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice Maqbool Baqar had taken up a contempt of court application against the chief secretary and health secretary for allegedly violating court’s order.

The court directed the authorities to prepare strategy for an effective awareness campaign so that people living in every nook and corner of the province are made aware of the causes and effects of the measles and ways and means to prevent it.

The applicant, Advocate Zulifkar Ali Langah, told the court that its orders regarding campaign about adverse effects of rubella and other measles were not implemented properly as the government had taken certain measures in relation to the awareness campaign. He added the government had published the advertisement about the measles in two newspapers which was not sufficient. Therefore, he requested the court to order authorities concerned to launch proper awareness campaign about the measles. Earlier, the SHC chief justice had taken notice of reported deaths of 48 children caused by rubella virus in parts of Thatta and Sajawal districts when Advocate Zulifkar Ali Langah brought such matter into his knowledge.
