SC directs KP govt to finalise LB poll date within a week

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has directed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government to consult the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and finalise within a week a date for conducting Local Bodies’ (LB) polls in KP. The SC ruling came after the KP government’s Monday expressed willingness to conduct LB elections in April 2015.

A division bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Nasirul Mulk expressed dissatisfaction over the government’s reports about arrangements for the LB polls in Sindh, Punjab and KP.

During the hearing, KP Advocate General Latif Yousafzai appeared before the court and submitted a written reply that the KP government has decided to withdraw its decision to use biometric system in the polls to avoid delay in the elections.

The KP government expressed willingness to hold elections by April 2015, said the AG.

The CJP directed the KP AG to consult the Election Commission and finalise the polling date within a week. The court adjourned the hearing till December 8.
