LAHORE-

India released four Pakistani prisoners on Tuesday, private media reported.

Indian Border Security Forces (BSF) handed over the prisoners  to Rangers personnel at Lahore’s Wagha Border.

The prisoners were detained for a long period of time in Indian prisons despite the completion of their respective sentences. Out of the four prisoners, one was a fisherman while three others were civilians.

Few days earlier, 35 Indian fishermen and one civilian were released from the District Prison Malir. The release of the prisoners came one day after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi exchanged pleasantries at the 18th SAARC summit.

India and Pakistan regularly arrest fishermen who accidentally cross the marked water boundary of each state. According to the Fishermen Cooperative Society, around  400 Pakistani fishermen are still detained in India.
