SHC seeks govt response over alleged theft of 1973 constitution’s original manuscript

The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday directed the Interior secretary, Islamabad Inspector General Police (IGP) and other authorities to respond to a petition calling for a probe into the alleged theft of the original manuscript of the 1973 Constitution of Pakistan.

Petitioner Agha Syed Attaullah Shah, chairman of non-governmental organisation (NGO) Raah-e-Raast Trust had approached the court requesting it to order the Interior Ministry and Islamabad IGP to register a case regarding the theft of the original draft of the constitution.

In the petition, Agha submitted that some news websites have published reports revealing that the original draft of the 1973 constitution, which bore the signatures of all the then constituent assembly members and president, has been stolen.

He said that parliamentary sources had also confirmed that the original document of the 1973 constitution was not available in the record and archives of the National Assembly.
