The Lahore High Court on Thursday barred the police from illegally arresting any Pakistan Tehreeke-e-Insaf (PTI) workers and also ordered the police not to harass any peaceful protesters.

Observing that protesting peacefully is the right of all citizens, the LHC bench decided in favour of PTI over a petition filed by the party against the police for illegally detaining PTI workers.

The petition was submitted by Insaf Lawyers Forum Punjab Senior Vice President Advocate Gohar Nawaz Sindhu to the LHC, asking the court to prevent the government from creating hurdles against PTI workers.

The petitioner had stated that citizens are protected under Articles 15, 16 and 19 of the Constitution of Pakistan. The advocate also added that according to article 9, the protesters cannot be held behind bars for “a peaceful protest”. He said that there are “no red, green, or blue areas that are prohibited by the constitution”, adding that people are at liberty to conduct proceedings at public places as it is granted by the constitution.
