Gullu appeals for justice

LHC issues notice to prosecutor general after accepting petition for hearing verdict against Gullu Butt

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday accepted for hearing a plea against a trial court’s decision against Gullu Butt and issued notices to all stakeholders including the prosecutor general.

According to his lawyer, Gullu was sentenced by a trial court to 11 years and three months rigorous imprisonment and Rs 1.1 million fine whereas no complaint was registered against him.

Gullu’s advocate therefore requested the court to suspend Gullu’s penalty and “grant him bail as long as the appeal is sub judice” but the request was not granted.

During the hearing, the LHC said that Gullu could either withdraw the appeal or the court would dismiss it.

Shahid Aziz, notoriously referred to as Gullu Butt, had filed a petition in the LHC for suspension of his sentence and release on bail.

The petition stated that an Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) had sentenced the petitioner in “violation of the law” and without paying heed to the “facts” of the matter.

Gullu was arrested after he was caught on cameras damaging several vehicles during a clash between Pakistan Awami Tehreek workers and police in Lahore’s Model Town area on June 17. Aziz alias Gullu is presently behind the bars at Kot Lakhpat Central Jail.
