Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah said Friday that the name of the new Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan (CEC) would be announced before December 1.

Speaking to reporters outside the Parliament House, Shah said that appointing a new CEC is the responsibility of both the government and opposition, adding that due to the need of a mutual agreement, there had been a delay in the appointment.

He said that he would speak to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif with regards to the CEC’s appointment, and also mentioned that he had received a phone call from the premier on Friday in this regard but he was attending the National Assembly session at that time.

He said that apart from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), all parties had agreed on former chief justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani for the CEC post.

Taking a dig at Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, Shah said that those who protest outside the Parliament House should not point fingers at others.

The opposition leader said that Khan should fight with the government instead of the state, adding that the PTI leader’s statements amount to challenging the state.
