An Anti-Terrorism Court in Gilgit on Tuesday sentenced Actress Veena Malik, her husband Asad Bashir Khan, TV host Shaista Wahidi and Geo-Jang group owner Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman to 26 years imprisonment in a case pertaining to disrespecting religious personalities through a TV program, private media reported.
Following a morning show broadcast by Geo TV in May where a ‘manqabat’ (religious poetry) was played during re-enactment of Veena Malik’s wedding, a number of petitions were filed in the courts across the country against the accused for’ hurting religious sentiments.’
On Tuesday, ATC judge Raja Shehbaz also imposed 1.3 million rupees fine on the convicts and ordered that their properties should be sold to raise the fine, if they fail to pay it.
The court, in its 40-page verdict, also asked the police to arrest the convicts.
The ruling added that the convicts can appeal in Gilgit-Baltistan High Court.
