US drone kills 4 militants in North Waziristan

ISLAMABAD —

Pakistani intelligence officials say a suspected U.S. drone strike has killed four alleged militants in the country’s tribal region along the Afghan border.

They say the missiles struck a compound Wednesday in Kund Sar area of North Waziristan’s Shawal, a semi-autonomous area ruled by tribal laws and used as a safe haven by a mix of local and al-Qaida linked foreign militants.

Pakistani Army launched a major campaign to clear the area of militants in mid-June; so far it claims to have killed over 1,200 militants. But resistance continues, and a militant raid on Nov. 16 killed a Pakistani army officer and two soldiers.

The three Pakistani officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.
