The government has received Rs 50 billion through fast running electricity meters in the past one year, a petition filed in the Supreme Court Lahore Registry said on Wednesday.

Barrister Zafarullah in a petition filed in Lahore Registry of the SC said that the power consumers have suffered financial problems due to the inflated electricity bills. The petition said that the government has confessed inflated recovery from the power consumers but didn’t take steps to reimburse the excessive amount to consumers.

The petitioner further said that the Independent Power Plants (IPPs) are producing much below their actual electricity generation capacity causing power crisis in the country but the government has failed to take steps to redress the situation.

The petitioner sought a court order for reimbursement of the consumers’ money and closure of the IPPs producing lesser than 80 per cent of their power generation capacity.
