Veteran educationists and intellectuals Monday appreciated the federal government’s decision for revising curriculum up to the higher secondary school level by setting up National Curriculum Council (NCC) in two months.

The curriculum up to the higher secondary school level would be launched in Islamabad and all provinces after creation of the National Curriculum Council (NCC).

Veteran educationist, poet and critic Professor Dr Fakharul Haq Noori said that the NCC will help to develop minimum curriculum that ensures minimum national standards in all subjects and emphasises on national ideology and societal needs.

Dr Noori said that while developing the new curriculum for schools and colleges, the NCC under guidance from IPEMC should keep in view the Islamic and national ideology by including chapters conforming with present day needs like environment, awareness against corruption and energy saving.

Planning and development senior official Dr Mehmood Khalid Qamar said that the NCC, which would directly work under the Inter-Provincial Education Ministers Conference (IPEMC), will decide the minimum standards for curriculum including chapters on national heroes etc while the provinces would be free to add their local heroes to the curriculum.

National Book Foundation (NBF) Managing Director Dr Inamul Haq Javed said that NCC would develop the national curriculum framework and would help boost research on curriculum, teachers’ training and assessment.

“The NCC will revise uniform minimum quality standards in curriculum,” he said. He said the development of curriculum will provide for more room for developing the capacity among students for self-directed learning, spirit of inquiry, critical thinking, problem-solving, team-work and analytic thinking.

It is pertinent to mention here that the decision to create the NCC was taken by the Inter-Provincial Education Ministers’ Conference earlier this year.

Meanwhile, the NCC would consist of three members each from all provinces and also from Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and FATA. The members may consist of concerned Secretary Education, Director Bureau of Curriculum and Chairman Textbook Board. All provinces except from the Sindh province have nominated their members for the council.
