In a renewed bid to widen its political sphere and to give credence to its claim of becoming a national political party, Mutahhada Qaumi Movement (MQM) has launched a membership campaign in the federal capital.
Four membership camps were set up in different parts of Islamabad including G-9 Markaz in a three-day drive.
Senior leaders of MQM, Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui and MNA Abdul Rashid Godil, visited the camps and looked after the overall activity which was otherwise a lacklustre affair without any advertisements.
Talking to the journalists, Dr Siddiqui said that people’s participation in the campaign proved that people had rejected family-based politicians and old system of governance.
MQM Islamabad Incharge Anis Abbasi said that the campaign had attracted a “good response”, especially from the youth who were “sick of monotonous politics” of other political parties.
Responding to a question regarding number of members that MQM’s campaign could attract, Abbasi explained that his part gets a lot of negative coverage in media and they were trying hard to present the true picture of MQM to the public in Islamabad.
“We don’t have unlimited funds like other parties to spend on promotional activities; that is why we could not do any advertisement of our membership campaign but we believe that with sheer hard work and by the power of Altafi Bhai’s message, we will succeed in making MQM the number one political party of Islamabad,” Abbasi claimed.
