Need for a reality check

Imran Khan’s credentials of being a politician are becoming doubtful

Nothing is more dangerous for a politician than a loss of the sense of reality. Cooped up in a container for over three months now and surrounded all the time by sycophants, Imran Khan has started living in a world of his own constructed fantasies. Politics for him is no more a peaceful competition with accommodation and tolerance as hallmarks. Khan instead talks about decisive battles and contests. He has developed a perception that everyone outside the PTI is his enemy or a paid agent of his perceived enemies. This has led him to make outlandish claims. During his Jhelum address on Sunday he said the PML-N government had paid IB, the prime civilian security agency, Rs2.7 billion to sabotage the sit-ins. Further, the government was fishing out media houses Rs3 billion every month to malign the PTI.

Imran Khan has become exceptionally intolerant. He has used harsh language against critics that include politicians, rights activists and retired judges. He has levelled accusations against them which have in some cases led to legal notices of libel. He is not willing to admit that he can ever be wrong or that those who criticise him could be doing this not out of malice or enmity but because they sincerely think his policies need rectification. In his latest address he has suggested that journalists, anchorpersons and columnists who find fault with his policies might have been paid by the government.

Khan’s demand for a judicial commission is justified. But the threat extended by him that his movement would not remain peaceful if the demand was not accepted by November 30 is inappropriate. This should not however lead the government to overreact. The firing on PTI workers in Jhelum is condemnable. The government must punish those responsible. Acts of the sort can lead to lawlessness all over the country that does not bode well for the system. The government has to resolve the differences with the PTI through talks and timely action on points agreed.

  3. Imran Khan only speaks truth and exposes wrong doings and corruption of so-called 'parliament group'. what sweet or soft language you will use for a proven thief, decoit or looter? All the corrupt elements have united and Nawaz Sharif is using public money to purchase media persons, oblige parliament group and improve his image. Why does he come up with facts and figures about his foreign wealth? How much income tax molvi fazlur rahman pays ? How about Zardari wealth, bogus will of benazir and mass scale corruption? Imran Khan has to continue his crusade against corrupt and inept mafias ruling the country in turn.
