LAHORE-

A single bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) comprising Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah Tuesday heard petitions against appointment of Maryam Nawaz as chairperson of the Prime Minister’s Youth Loan Scheme (PMYLS).

The court urged for appointments on merit and said that if the government would not revise its decision the court will give its ruling in the case.

“The chairperson has to be changed,” Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah observed during the hearing.

The judge, however, said the court was showing grace by giving a chance to the government to change the chairperson in a lawful and transparent manner.

During the case hearing, the petitioners pleaded that Maryam had been appointed on political grounds on a key post without merit.

The government’s counsel argued that the prime minister had exercised his discretionary powers for Maryam’s appointment on an honorary post for which the rules were not required to be followed. Moreover, Maryam was not empowered to distribute the loan scheme funds, he said.

The government’s counsel also produced academic testimonials of Maryam downloaded from Internet. The court will give a verdict in the case on Friday.
