Death toll in Thar escalated to 37 as one more child died of malnutrition in the famine-hit region. Moreover, at least 16 children in two villages of Tharparkar were disabled by contracting a ‘mysterious’ disease.

Dearth of food persists in the region whereas Ministry of Health and polio teams have failed to reach out to the villages.

Thirty-eight children have been admitted to Mithi Hospital whereas two children have been referred to Hyderabad Hospital due to their critical condition.

Eight of the disabled children belong to Village Qabool Jauter in District Chachro while eight others belong to a Village Jambhari in District Dhali. Per reports, the children’s bones have shrunk, diminishing their physical strength and rendering them unable to walk.

Per detials, 114 tube wells in Chachro and Dhali have become dysfunctional and wells supplying water to these villages have dried out due to the drought. The supply of wheat is restricted to the cities. Relief services have also not been able to access far-flung settlements.
