A new-born baby died in Tharparkar on Friday, pushing the death toll in the famine-hit region to 39 in the month of October. The child died in Mirpurkhas Hospital after local doctors referred him there for treatment.

Doctors told reporters that more than 90 people, including 41 children, were still admitted in Mithi Hospital. The doctors cited malnutrition and unavailability of immediate treatment and care at homes as the cause of most of the children’s deaths.

At least 464 children have died in the drought-hit Tharparkar over the last nine months.
