The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan has reserved judgement in respect of the appointment of heads of national institutions case. The judgement is likely to be pronounced next year.
A three-member bench of the SC presided over by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Nasirul Mulk took up for hearing Ghulam Rasool versus Federal Government case Thursday.
The attorney general of Pakistan took the plea that the commission constituted for appointing heads of the institutions only sends the names whereas appointment is made by the prime minister as the government and cabinet are run by through the PM in the parliamentary system.
Justice Amir Hani Muslim remarked, “Are the norms of merit kept in view at the time of appointment of heads of institutions?” to which the AG replied in the affirmative.
When the judge observed that there should be a formal procedure for making appointments, the AGP said that the court is fully empowered to review the appointments and could annul any appointment which the court believes is not correct.
