Police claim killing 572 criminals in targeted operation

A considerable reduction in all heads of crime has been witnessed during the ongoing targeted operation in Karachi.

The police focused against terrorism, target killing, kidnapping for ransom and extortion. Due to targeted police actions, 572 criminals, dacoits and terrorists were killed in different encounters whereas 16,986 have been arrested from 5-9-2013 to 29-10-2014.

Sindh IGP Ghulam Hyder Jamali was informed this during a review meeting regarding law and order situation on Thursday in Central Police Office. The detail of the total arrests revealed that 1,233 target killers, 342 terrorists, 424 extortionists, 95 kidnappers and 15,892 other criminals were nabbed. The report further disclosed that as much as 10,156 arms and ammunition were recovered from the possession of criminals and terrorists including three LMGs, 196 Kks/SMGs, 8,939 pistols/revolvers, 155 rifles, 149 repeaters/shot guns and 174 hand grenades during the above-mentioned period.

The report added that during the current year (2014), a total of 170 police personnel embraced martyrdom while fighting against the crimes. According to the details, the report further added that 129 policemen in Karachi, 26 in Hyderabad, nine in Larkana, three in Shaheed Benazirabad, two in Sukkur and one in Mirpurkhas ranges embraced martyrdom.

The IGP was further informed that various capacity building measures had been adopted to enhance professional acumen of policemen. Under intelligence-led policing, re-vamping of special branch and counter terrorism initiatives had been taken, it added. Similarly, the forensic division was being upgraded while work on establishment of DNA Laboratory within the premises of forensic division was going, the report said. Policing was also focusing on promotion of community policing and gender responsive policing, it added.
