Imran Khan in his labyrinth

His obstinacy is depriving him of erstwhile allies

Led by false hopes Imran Khan has landed himself in a cul-de-sac. It has suddenly dawned upon him now that the army and courts won’t support any move against the status quo. One is not sure how long this moment of lucidity remains. Instead of going round and round and reaching the same dead end, he needs to stop for a while, relax and do some thinking. Unless he does so it may not be long before workers, tired of unproductive protest marches, start ditching him.

Despite all the commitment on the part of his workers and spending huge amount of funds, Khan has failed to get Nawaz Sharif’s resignation. A good leader has to try a new set of tactics when the old ones fail. It is not a matter of shame to change course or stage a retreat when necessary. The resignations sent by his MNAs have yet not been accepted. Would it not be more sensible to try now to achieve his objectives through Parliament? By returning to NA the PTI can play a key role in evolving the much needed electoral reforms.

Imran Khan’s obstinacy is depriving him of erstwhile allies. The first to part company was Tahirul Qadri. He needs now to take note of Sirjul Haq’s remarks whose Jamaat-e-Islami is a part of the coalition led by the PTI in KP. The unbending stance taken by Nawaz Shrif and Imran Khan has led Haq to maintain that “both are playing dirty politics for their own benefits”, and that the both are “two sides of the same coin”.

Despite its confrontationist politics, the PTI is considered to be a party with a modern outlook. Khan needs to review what kind of an image the PTI is acquiring by following JI’s ideological lead. On Wednesday the KP Assembly put aside a resolution for Malala Yousafzai whose Nobel brought honour to KP and Pakistan. Instead the Assembly passed another resolution to press the US for freeing Aafia Siddiqui.

  1. Passing resolutions for freeing a convicted terrorist and not doing anything for eradicating poverty, polio and famine. What a lame party is PTI!

  2. Freeing Aafia Siddiqui is a great cause all Pakistanis must be united to get back home this great lady, this great mother a great scientific lady of Ir Pakistan, we must continue to fight to get her back, Go Nawaz Go

  3. PTI struggle is progressing towards clear polarization between old and tried guards of status co and enlightened forces of naya Pakistan. The former is hiding behind a dubious and rigged parliament and needs further exposition by Imran Khan. There is no retreat and no compromise between 2 forces. Mian Nawaz Sharif realizes this ground reality sooner the better.

    • The change in Pakistan, at the grass roots level has been astounding. The urban support is in the hands of PTI, its just a matter of time for a people's revolution.

  4. it does not matter. the only objective is to end this family and feudal rule in Pakistan. we are sick and tired of these lame and coward leaders who are unable to talk blunt in the presence of American president. but when they come back to Pakistan they consider themselves kings. imran KHAN is the only leader in Pakistan that has decent personality, charisma, confidence to face the world leaders head to head. that is the only way to get aafia back and that is the only way to keep people of pakistan in check.

    • He is the only one, that is actually representing the common man and the public. PPP just talks about Bhutto and days gone in the past, while promoting nepotism and ethnic politics in Sindh. the PML-N represents a class of incompetent politicians, who have no concept about governing. It is a shame, that the highest growth rates in Pakistan history were under military rule, and civilian leadership has only looted from the masses through incompetent stewardship.

    • Seems as if you are just bashing him for nothing .it is fox like you we are behind the A ball for once we should ignore some minor things and join hands fir the right cause of Pakistan and pakistanies .first and foremost my friend we are in great danger and poverty is growing by the seconds over Morals are almost gone we have ground left so plz all pakistani brothers and sisters need to start contributions to wards the nation by their mony, carrier, knowledge, experience, scholars, and what ever I could not think off please add Thank You and Pakistan Paindabad

  5. This is a misleading and pessimistic article that fails to recognize the amazing contributions Imran Khan and the PTI have done in mobilizing popular support for causes that every Pakistan agrees with. Lets see the points made in this opinion piece.

    1. "Led by false hopes Imran Khan has landed himself in a cul-de-sac. It has suddenly dawned upon him now that the army and courts won’t support any move against the status quo. One is not sure how long this moment of lucidity remains. Instead of going round and round and reaching the same dead end, he needs to stop for a while, relax and do some thinking. Unless he does so it may not be long before workers, tired of unproductive protest marches, start ditching him."
Answer: If anything is support has grown. This is the first time in decades the public in Pakistan has been so mobilized by a popular movement. By sticking to their principles, the PTI has demonstrated to the public, this is a party that cannot be bought or paid off. The PML-N essentially have lost their mandate and have been damaged immensely by the popular support for the PTI over the past several months.

    2. "Despite all the commitment on the part of his workers and spending huge amount of funds, Khan has failed to get Nawaz Sharif’s resignation. A good leader has to try a new set of tactics when the old ones fail. It is not a matter of shame to change course or stage a retreat when necessary. Answer: The entire parliament has no mandate. It was a rigged election. The sensible thing is to stop, probe the fraud in the election, and determine the changes necessary for a re-election. This is a position where there is no compromise. A crime was committed, it needs to be probed. Is this how pathetic justice is in Pakistan now? Where we are just supposed to accept a rigged election? If someone robbed your house, would you just say, "oh its ok, lets try to make a compromise that next time you come to my house you wont steal anything." Its rediculous. The people involved in rigging should be prosecuted and jailed, end of discussion.

    3. "Imran Khan’s obstinacy is depriving him of erstwhile allies."
Answer: No need for allies, when the entire system is corrupt. Imran Khan is one of the few politicians that actually stands for something. His principle, and focus needs to be commended. The rest of the establishment has a long history of switching sides or allying with corrupt leadership for their own benefit. Imran Khan's steadfastness will bring even more support for the PTI within the masses.

    4. "The first to part company was Tahirul Qadri."
Answer: Another misleading point. TQ role in the sit in was specifically in regards to the Model Town incident. His followers were already tired, because they had been there 24-7, without breaks. While IK and the PTI would leave during the day and return in the evening. Tahirul Qadri's movement is still against the status quo, and they will return in full force after additional fundraisers, etc.

    5. "He needs now to take note of Sirjul Haq’s remarks whose Jamaat-e-Islami is a part of the coalition led by the PTI in KP. The unbending stance taken by Nawaz Shrif and Imran Khan has led Haq to maintain that “both are playing dirty politics for their own benefits”, and that the both are “two sides of the same coin”."
Answer: Sirajul Haq is wrong. Comparing a criminal government of the PML with the PTI is a travesty. There is no equivalence between the two. One is a government that came in power through corruption, the other is the victimized party that is asking for justice. When justice is not possible through the legal system, its time to go to the streets. If JI wants to support the establishment, and wants to see business as usual, then good riddance.

    6. "Despite its confrontationist politics, the PTI is considered to be a party with a modern outlook. Answer: Freeing Aafia Siddiqui and supporting Malala Yousafzai are both notable goals. Yes both should have been supported. The PTI should pursue an independent course without manipulation. There is no need to compromise with political parties, when the public is 100% supportive of your stance.
