CJP has something to say to new civil servants

A 65-member delegation of participants of 101st National Management Course, comprising faculty members and course participants called on the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Nasirul Mulk as a part of their inland study tour.

Addressing the delegation the CJP informed the participants about composition, functioning and jurisdiction of the apex court of the country.

Explaining to them the constitutional jurisdiction of Supreme Court, the chief justice said that Supreme Court has original, appellate and advisory jurisdiction.

The court exercises original jurisdiction in inter-governmental disputes, be that dispute between the federal government and a provincial government or among provincial governments.

The court also exercises original jurisdiction for the enforcement of fundamental rights, where a question of ‘public importance’ is involved which is commonly called as suo motu jurisdiction of Supreme Court of Pakistan. The court has appellate jurisdiction in civil and criminal matters.

Furthermore, the court has advisory jurisdiction in giving opinion to the government on a question of law.

Moreover, the Supreme Court has special jurisdiction under Article 187 of the Constitution having power to issue such directions, orders or decrees as may be necessary for doing complete justice in any case or matter pending before it. He further told them that National Judicial Policy Making Committee is a forum chaired by chief justice of Pakistan and comprises Federal Shariat Court chief justice and chief justices of all high courts as members.

This forum prepares and implements judicial policy for improving the capacity and performance of the administration of justice by setting standards.

At the end of session, the NationalManagementCollege presented a shield to the chief justice of Pakistan as a token of respect and CJP also presented a souvenir to them as a gesture of goodwill.
