Sindh Minister for Information and Local Government Sharjeel Inam Memon has said that the seats designated for opposition parties in the provincial assembly cannot be allotted to the legislators of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) unless their resignations are accepted by the governor.

Talking to media persons in the Sindh Assembly jurisdiction prior to the assembly session on Friday, Sharjeel Memon said it was the democratic right of any political party either to sit on treasury benches in the assembly or to move to opposition benches. Similarly, the MQM has decided to quit the Sindh government and it is their decision.

He said the MQM members could not be allotted opposition benches in the house until their resignations were accepted by the Sindh governor.

Commenting on the brutal killing of Hazara community members and attack on JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazalur Rehman in Quetta, the information minister said it could be termed as the failure of Balochistan government. The terrorism in the country started and intensified right from dictatorial rule but the elected government was fighting against it.

Later, during question hour in the provincial assembly, Sharjeel Memon said that North Sindh Urban Services Corporation (NSUSC) was established in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank in 2007 with the objective to keep the cities neat and clean but the corporation failed to deliver.

He recalled that in 2007 then taluka Nazim Tahir Phulpoto had signed the agreement of establishing the corporation. It was an international agreement. “We are not satisfied with the performance of the corporation. Therefore, I have written to the planning and development department to explore as how the agreement can be cancelled,” he said.

He further said that the Sindh government was paying salaries to the employees of the NSUSC but could not force them to work and even the corporation itself had failed to utilise its workers. “Therefore, considering it as a burden on the kitty, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has dissolved its board of directors,” he disclosed.

The local government minister further said that the corporation was only given the schemes of Khairpur city where it completely failed.
