3-day polio drive kicks off in city

The health authorities on Monday kicked off a three-day anti-polio campaign in Karachi aimed that vaccinating over 0.7 million children below the age of five years.

According to the health ministry officials, the immunization campaign will be run in 75 union councils including Malir, SITE, Quaid Abad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Gaddap. Nearly 7,80,000 children would be administered anti-polio drops during the campaign which was suspended in several city areas last month due to security reasons.

Officials said ‘effective’ security measures have been taken for the protection of polio teams.

Polio campaign deferred in Baldia Town

A three-day polio campaign which was due to start on Monday in Rasheedabad, Yousaf Ghoth, Mawacha Ghoth of Baldia Town has been suspended due to lack of security.

Polio teams gathered early morning to move to their respective places for polio vaccination but workers couldn’t leave due to insufficient security. According to the sources, polio campaign has been started in other areas of Karachi including Korangi and Landhi on Monday.

At least 64 people, including health workers and security personnel, have been killed in militant attacks on polio vaccination teams since December 2012.
