IHC suspends FIR against PM, others in PAT workers’ killings

Islamabad High Court (IHC) has suspended a First Information Report (FIR) registered against Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif, several federal ministers, Islamabad Police Inspector General (IG) and others on the orders of Islamabad additional sessions judge for the killing of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) workers in clashes with the police during the party’s protest sit-in in Islamabad.

The decision was issued in writing Monday by IHC’s Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui.

Additional Attorney General (AAG) Rana Waqar and Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Syed Hasnain Ibrahim Kazmi appeared in court on behalf of the Federal Government.

They took the plea that police officers were performing their duty on Constitution Avenue during the sit-ins of PAT and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and some people from PAT were killed during clashes with the police.

On the request of PAT, Islamabad additional sessions judge had ordered the registration of case regarding the killing of PAT workers against PM Sharif, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Railway Minister Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Islamabad IG, Islamabad former IG Khalid Khattak, Punjab IG Mushtaq Sukhera, Railway IG, Deputy Commissioner Mujahid Sherdil, SSP (Operations) and Secretariat Police Station SHO under Section 22-A of the Constitution.

The federation’s counsel had taken the plea during the previous hearing that the case had been registered illegally against the PM, federal ministers and the police officer and the parties concerned were not heard.

“The decision by the additional session’s judge has demoralised police officers,” said the federation’s counsel and prayed that the court suspend the FIR.
