World renowned social worker Abdul Sattar Edhi was held at gunpoint at his centre in Mithadar area of Karachi Sunday and deprived of gold and cash estimated to be worth millions of rupees.
According to Edhi Centre spokesman, eight dacoits broke into Mithadar Edhi Centre and looted the centre after holding Edhi and the centre’s staff hostage.
Edhi said that dacoits woke him up at around 9:45 am and asked for keys of the storage lockers which contained cash and valuables donated to Edhi Foundation for social work.
“They – dacoits – did not manhandle me,” he said, adding that this was the first time he was robbed despite being held up by robbers previously.
Edhi’s son Faisal Edhi said that the dacoits robbed gold and cash from two closets. He said that the criminals spent over an hour rummaging through cupboards and drawers and escaped on motorbikes with Rs 10 million in cash and five kilogrammes of gold.
Mithader Police has registered a First Information Report (FIR) of the incident on Faisal’s complaint.
Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah taking notice of robbery in Edhi Centre, has directed police to bring the culprits to book immediately. He has also directed Sindh Police Additional Inspector General (AIG) Ghulam Qadir Thebo to submit a report of robbery incident.
Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has also issued a statement in condemnation of the looting and demanded the immediate arrest of the robbers.
