PPP sets stage for Bilawal’s grand show

Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) ‘Caravan of Democracy’ is all set to flood the Bagh-e-Jinnah in Karachi today (Saturday), as PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Friday told supporters at the rally venue that he is the “heir to the legacy of martyrs” and “the saviour of the soil”.

Addressing workers from his bullet-proof container, Bilawal raised party slogans and also read out a poem paying tribute to PPP founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and his mother, the late Benazir Bhutto. The container was made in 2007 when late Benazir Bhutto had returned to Pakistan. Bilawal announced from the container that he will carry forward his mother’s mission.

The party is expecting a gathering of over 0.1 million supporters from across Pakistan for the show, which is being termed the formal launch of the young party chairman in national politics.

Meanwhile, the Sindh government on Friday approved a request by the Karachi police to suspend cellular services in the city to ensure foolproof security during the PPP rally that is scheduled to take place at the Quaid’s mausoleum.

However, the federal government has not granted permission to suspend cellular services in the metropolitan as yet.

According to intelligence reports, terrorists might target the rally which will mark the anniversary of late Benazir Bhutto’s homecoming in 2007.

As part of the security plan, bringing water bottles from home to the venue has also been prohibited. The areas around the venue have also been cordoned off by containers.

According to a press statement by Karachi police, about 22,500 police officers have been summoned from all over Sindh for the rally’s security.

Further, 27 parking spaces will be provided to participants of the rally, and search and surveillance parties using 110 walk through gates and CCTV cameras will monitor the rally.
