Karachi jail tunnel mastermind arrested

Police on Thursday claimed to have arrested mastermind of the Karachi jailbreak plot. According to SSP East, Pir Muhammad Shah, the accused, identified as Alauddin, was arrested when police raided a house in Malir.

The police said he was owner of the house from where members of a militant group were trying to tunnel into Karachi Central Jail. The Karachi jail holds a large number of high-profile militant detainees and has repeatedly come under threat in recent years.

On Monday, Rangers Colonel Tahir Mehmood told a press conference that the paramilitary troops raided the house and thwarted a banned group’s bid release 100 dangerous militants through the tunnel.

Authorities had fortified the jail by erecting double boundary walls in view of the threats and jammers were also installed around the jail to prevent any bomb attack.

Officials said several suspects rounded up by law-enforcement agencies in connection with the tunnel plot were being interrogated.
