The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday ordered suspension of the First Information Reports (FIRs) lodged against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and police personnel over violence on August 30 as implicated by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PAT) and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT).
Justice Shaukat Siddiqui heard the case with police officials arguing that their job was only to obey government orders.
Additional Attorney General Waqar Rana submitted that both the protesting parties had been given conditional permission for holding sit-ins but they violated the agreement. He argued that police officials performed their official responsibilities and there is no justification of filing cases against them.
The court accepted the application for hearing, suspended action under the FIR and issued notice to the concerned parties.
The FIRs were registered after an additional district and sessions court implicated Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, IGP Islamabad, IGP Punjab and IGP Railway among other senior police officials in the matter.
Justice Siddiqui subsequently adjourned the proceedings, with next date of the hearing yet to be announced.
At least three people were killed, whereas hundreds including women, children and policemen were injured in clashes between PTI, PAT protesters and police personnel in the federal capital on August 30. Protesters were fired at with rubber bullets and tear gas shells to stop them from entering PM House.
