The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday sought reports from the home secretary and provincial chief of the prisons police on the recent jailbreak attempt in Karachi.

Headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, a division bench was hearing a miscellaneous application was filed by Rana Faizul Hasan, a civil rights campaigner, who had approached the court seeking inquiry into terrorists’ attempt to break into the Karachi Central Prison.

Rana said terrorists had build an underground tunnel inside a house in Ghousia Colony near Central Jail which was leading into the jail barracks where high profile prisoners were kept but Rangers timely action foiled the breakout attempt. He said mobile phones and daggers were also seized during crackdown inside the prison.

He alleged this was an evidence of security lapse at the jail which house hundreds of the hardened criminals. He requested the court to summon reports from authorities about failure of security arrangements made at and around the central jail.

Earlier, Rana had filed a constitution petition through which he sought court directives for the authorities concerned to install jammers at the prisons across the province.
