The Pakistan Hindu Council has demanded right of dual vote for religious minorities and five per cent increase in reserved seats for the largest minority community in the National Assembly and other provincial assemblies.

In a meeting on Tuesday, the council passed a resolution demanding a constitutional amendment for ensuring protection of the rights of the minorities.

“The government must approve 5 per cent quota in all jobs as per 5 per cent population of Hindus in Pakistan which was already announced by the previous government,” said Dr Deepak Kumar Bhagchandani, general secretary of the Pakistan Hindu Council.

He said there must be representation of the Pakistan Hindu Council in the recently-announced Committee on Minorities Issues by the Sindh chief minister. The council urged the federal and provincial governments to implement the Supreme Court’s orders for the protection of minorities and the Child Marriage Restraint Bill 2013.

A large number of representatives from the Hindu community, including MNA Dr Ramesh Kumar Vankwani and Chela Ram Kewlani, attended the meeting. They also called for the appointment of chairman of the Evacuee Trust Board and its two board members from the Hindu community from each province.

The council also demanded that Karachi Hindu Gymkhana be handed over to local Hindu community through the Pakistan Hindu Council.
