Welcome to electoral politics

Khan and Qadri have finally realised how politics should work

After almost two months of sit-ins preceded by two separate long marches with numerous sensational subplots that followed, Imran Khan and Tahriul Qadri have discovered that an elected Prime Minister could not be forced to resign through mob pressure or hobnobbing with offstage players. Khan who led the Azadi March and Qadri who headed the Revolutionary March have grudgingly conceded that elections are the only means to enter the corridors of power. This is a welcome realisation.

Imran Khan who waited for weeks for the umpire to raise the finger now says he does not want to come to power through an understanding with the establishment. While it might sound ironic, he has called on Nawaz Sharif not to resign immediately but wait for him to gather public support for which he has started holding public meetings. Tahirul Qadri who claimed that the mid-term elections ‘would not result in any change nor will the poor get back their usurped rights’, has now called on his followers to prepare themselves for elections any time between three months and a year. Both are hoping for mid-term elections though like their earlier projections this too might turn out to be wishful thinking.

What is welcome is that the two leaders are now looking forward to an orderly change through polls. About two months of protests and rallies have caused losses to the economy, led to postponement of visits by foreign dignitaries including the President of China. The agitation which included a call for civil disobedience has generated a feeling of uncertainty in the country. There is now a need for the PTI and PAT to remove their camps from Islamabad which have lost relevance with attendance becoming negligible. They should instead concentrate on party building in all the four provinces. This will provide the two parties an opportunity for mass contact without disturbing public peace. Strong parties rooted in masses alone can bring about change in society. Soap box oratory cannot.
