PM tells India to cease fire, says Pakistan wants peace

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday said Pakistan’s desire for peace should not be misunderstood, and called upon India to immediately honour the sanctity of the Line of Control (LoC) and working boundary and cease fire.

Sharif was chairing a meeting of the National Security Committee that was summoned to discuss the surge in violence from across the border. The meeting was attended by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Adviser to PM on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz and senior military officials.

The top military leadership briefed the meeting’s participants about the latest situation along the LoC and working boundary. They said that Pakistani forces are only firing in defence and not targeting Indian civilian areas.

The nuclear-armed neighbours have traded blame for the cross-border strikes, which began during Eidul Azha celebrations in the predominantly Muslim region.

During the meeting, the premier said that his visit to Miranshah was a very moving experience.

He also paid rich tributes to troops who are fighting against terrorists in North Waziristan and noted the sacrifices of soldiers who had laid down their lives in defence of their motherland.
