*Sharif spends Eid with flood victims of Narowal, says govt committed to rehabilitating flood victims

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said Monday that the government will evolve a comprehensive strategy to prevent floods and mitigate the resultant damage, adding that the government is committed to the complete rehabilitation of flood victims and will utilise all resources for the purpose.

The PM, who spent the first day of Eidul Azha with the flood victims of Narowal, said that flood prevention measures required huge resources.

“Since the government is sincere in its efforts to alleviate poverty and serve the masses, it will resolve all problems and utilise all resources for the rehabilitation of flood victims,” he said.

Expressing pleasure in spending Eid with the flood victims, Sharif said he wanted to visit the area personally to see the damages and the relief and rehabilitation measures and to ascertain if the people were satisfied with the work or not.

The PM distributed rations and clothes amongst the flood victims and announced Rs 1.6 million as compensation for an elderly woman who informed him that her son had died in the floods.

Lauding the local authorities and the departments concerned for reaching out to the flood victims, the PM said that the government was committed to fully rehabilitate the people whose houses had been damaged in the floods.

Appreciating the efforts of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif for quick compensation of flood victims and visiting Narowal region thrice in the past few days, the PM expressed hope that the compensations’ initial instalment worth Rs 25,000 would have been paid to the flood victims.

“The government is aware of the challenges it faces ahead,” said the PM while he prayed for the progress and prosperity of Pakistan and its protection from the elements “who are trying to destabilise it”.

“The government is working on addressing the major issue of electricity shortage,” he added.

“All those who want to stop the development and progress of Pakistan will fail in their designs. They will realise one day that what they did was wrong as they are actually trying to hamper measures for the alleviation of poverty,” said the PM.

Sharif said his thoughts and prayers were with those fighting at and defending the country’s borders from internal and external threats.
