  • SC seeks EOBI’s reply on non-payment of pension to its employees, details of land purchased

Supreme Court (SC) has sought reply from government on non-payment of pension to its employees by EOBI and details of land purchased by it.

While presiding over a two-member SC bench during the course of hearing of EOBI corruption case Monday, Justice Saqib Nisar also directed that EOBI chairman or director general should appear in person before it.

Justice Nisar regretted that EOBI heads were not present in the hearing which was of “much importance”.

“We are reviewing only the matters of corruption. It is made clear that no discriminatory treatment will be meted out to anyone. Pensioners of the institution are facing hardships. We are not sitting here to harass. Board has to be run by its trustees and not by us.”

Some employees of EOBI filed an application through which the court was told that EOBI was not making payment of pension since long and they were facing difficulties due to non-payment of pension. They have made several rounds of the offices of officers and made contacts with top functionaries of government but no one has paid heed to their grievance. Where should they go and before whom they should express their grievance.

The court inquired from EOBI counsel Hafiz SA Rehman as to why the record had not been produced so far of land purchased by EOBI.

During the hearing, the EOBI counsel told the court that EOBI’s old chairman had been transferred while the new chairman had not taken over the charge as yet. He said that matters have been settled on the purchase of land between EOBI and other institutions. He also sought timer so that they could inform the court about it.

The court while seeking detailed reply on settlement of land adjourned the hearing indefinitely.
