Federal Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar Monday said that rehabilitation of the internally displaced persons is the top priority of the government and all possible efforts are being made to achieve this objective.
Dar said this while speaking at Air Headquarters with an audience at 23 PAF bases listening to his address connected to Islamabad via satellite.
The minister said the government fully realizes the potential of trade development. He said that many developing countries have tried substituting foreign aid to fill the savings-investment gap, adding that research showed that such an approach may have induced growth in the short term, but to sustain economic development and growth over the long term, trade and not aid is essential.
The minister said that China has made it to the top of the world because of trade. “China’s GDP has been growing at around 9 per cent per annum and its goods and services are rapidly rising in quality and value. Having emerged as world’s largest manufacturer, China’s trade has expanded from $59.14 billion in 1979 to $3.5 trillion in 2013,” he said.
He said that a liberalised trade regime benefits the economy with efficient infrastructure linking local producers to domestic, regional and global markets and a regulatory environment that encourages a vibrant private sector.
“In this context, the government has embarked upon an ambitious programme of Economic Corridor and to operationalise Gwadar port to link Pakistan to regional markets and to make Pakistan an attractive transit hub. I am sure that with our declared economic policies, commitment, good governance and transparency, we will make Pakistan a leading regional economy in the next few years,” he said.
