The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday declared the detention of Gullu Butt by police authorities after the granting of a bail as unlawful and ordered for his immediate release.

Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan of the LHC asked the government on what grounds Butt had been detained when a divisional court had already granted him a bail.

In its remarks, the LHC said that if the superintendent of police (SP) who was praising Butt for smashing car-windows had not been detained then Butt should also be released.

The court ordered the Punjab government to immediately release Gullu Butt and notify the court in writing. A single-member bench was hearing the case.

Butt had come into the limelight after he was caught on cameras brazenly damaging several vehicles in the presence of the police during a clash between Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) workers and the police in Model Town.

He had been arrested after the incident and was presented before an anti-terrorist court (ATC). Police officials had told the court that Butt had been involved in vandalism and looting when a clash had broken out between the police and PAT supporters.

Butt has submitted now and again that the police wrongly implicated him in the case, pleading that he was only passing through the area of the occurrence and requested that he be released.
