Imran Khan’s tactics

False promises only

In his latest speech from atop his container Imran Khan congratulated his activists for creating a record of a 42-day long protest. Apparently when the PTI launched its mach from Lahore it was not going to the capital to simply create a world record. The irony is that it has failed to achieve nothing more than that. If Khan was really serious about getting Nawaz Sharif’s resignation, he is nowhere near the goal. As Javed Hashmi has revealed, Khan had assured those around him that the moment the marchers reached Islamabad, Sharif would quit. Once in Islamabad, he said the objective would be achieved within days and the sit-in may end in a week. If all this was meant to keep up the morale of his followers, Khan is liable to be accused of making false promises.

After three PTI MNAs refused to resign, the leadership seems to have lost confidence in the loyalty of other parliamentarians. It has disallowed the resigning MNAs to appear one by one before the Speaker to authenticate their signatures, insisting that they must appear collectively. The apprehension that the government might ‘buy them out’ is indicative of a fear that some of them might be amenable to pressure or gainful offers. This is the kind of mistrust that led to the introduction of chastity belts in the middle ages. How long can the PTI keep a watch on parliamentarians with a doubtful integrity?

The march on Islamabad failed to remove the Prime Minister. Equally fruitless was the sit-in. The civil disobedience move fizzled out. Even the core committee was not willing to collectively burn their electricity bills in public. As things stand, government offices open regularly, trains and coaches continue to ply and the PTV continues to broadcast. The government is therefore functioning. What about “jail bharo” movement or the fast-unto-death tactic introduced by Mahatama Gandhi? These are cheaper and much more effective tactics than holding large gatherings in major cities. What will Khan do if the Prime Minster still refused to step down?

  1. Pleased to read the truth finally. All we need is lesser media coverage on IK and Canadian national foreign agent Dr. Qadri. These two had lust for power, nothing more than that.
