KARACHI-
Intelligence agencies had alerted authorities this month that as many as five top Sindh police officials face serious life threats, a private news channel reported Friday.
According to the report, an intelligence agency had submitted a report to the IG Sindh police on September 4 stating that five senior Sindh Police officials face threats to their lives.
The names in the report included Senior Superintendent of Police Farooq Awan, Rao Anwar, Ali Raza and others.
On Thursday night, SSP Awan was targeted in an bomb blast but he escaped the attack.
Security sources said that Mufti Shakirullah, a terrorist of a outlawed outfit, masterminded the blast.
Following the attack, security of key police officials has been increased and they have been advised to remain careful during their movement.
Since 2001, Awan has been a key player in the police fight against terrorist groups in the city. He arrested the kidnappers and murderers of US journalist Daniel Pearl, in 2002 in Karachi.
The police officer also arrested Akram Lahori, a notorious militant involved in killings of minority Shiites.
