Muttahid Qaumi Movement(MQM) on Thursday kick started sit-in protests across Karachi against the arrest of 30 of its workers, a private news channel reported.
Late on Wednesday, Rangers raided MQM sector office on Abu al Hasan Isfahani Road and arrested 30 party workers who were attending a meeting.Eight of those arrested were later released.
Following the incident, MQM chief Altaf Hussain, residing in London, announced to commence sit-ins in ‘every street’ of the metropolis against ‘anti-Mohajir animosity’ and the ‘unwarranted’ arrest of party activists.
MQM has announced protests at 3-Talwar, Nagan Chowrangi, Rizvia, Liaqatabad, Numaish Chowrangi, Landhi, Gulahan Chawrangi, Star Gate and CM House.
The party also announced to boycott today’s session of Sindh Assembly.
Shops and business centres, petrol station and private schools closed down on Thursday morning following the news of protests.
Security has been beefed up across the city and security personnel are patrolling the areas on ‘high alert’, adds the report.
