The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday constituted a two-judge panel comprising Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali and Justice Mian Saqib Nisar for revisiting the Supreme Court Rules of 1980.

The SC’s full court meeting was held on Thursday and was attended by all judges. The meeting discussed the proposal of Pakistan Bar Council for amendments to be incorporated in Supreme Court Rules 1980.

The task was entrusted to an already constituted two member Supreme Court Rules revising committee for further consideration and suggestions.

Deliberating on the issue of institution and disposal of cases in the Supreme Court, the full court noted that between July 1 and September 19, the court decided 2,424 cases against the institution of 4,544 cases, with a total backlog of cases at 22,640 cases.

The full court observed the rising trend in institution of the cases due to the fact that the high courts are working with almost full strength of judges. The gap between institution and disposal is also partly due to summer vacations.
