Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif met Open Society Foundations Chairman George Soros on Thursday in New York.
The premier informed Soros about steps taken by the government to universalise primary education and appreciated his foundation’s work in Pakistan.
The Open Society Foundation undertook rehabilitation and reconstruction projects in Pakistan after the 2005 earthquake devastated eight districts, four in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and four in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
The foundation has also established a think-tank in Lahore and the Institute of Development and Economic Alternatives.
Further, PM Nawaz informed Soros, a hedge fund manager and philanthropist, about investment opportunities in Pakistan.
Open Society Foundations works on education, human rights, law and justice and media and transparency.
The premier reached New York early Thursday afternoon to address the 69th session of the UN General Assembly. During his stay in New York, the prime minister will also hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from various countries and co-host the UN Peacekeeping Summit with Vice President Joe Biden, the UN secretary general, president of Rwanda and the prime ministers of Japan and Bangladesh.
