UN secy general offers helping hand for flood relief

PM Sharif to address UN General Assembly on Sept 26, highlight Kashmir issue besides discussing Pakistan’s ties with India, Afghanistan

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has expressed willingness to assist Pakistan in its efforts for relief and rehabilitation of the flood-hit people.

Ban conveyed this message in a letter to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif while lauding the efforts of Pakistan government in providing relief to the flood-affected people across the country.

He also extended condolences to PM Sharif and the people of Pakistan over the loss of life and property in the flood.

PM TO ADDRESS UN SESSION:

In the meanwhile, PM Sharif will leave for United States on September 24 to attend the UN General Assembly session and will address the UN General Assembly on September 26.

In his speech, the PM is expected to focus on a cooperation-based relationship with Pakistan’s neighbouring countries especially ties with India and Afghanistan.

This PM is also expected to highlight the Kashmir issue at the session.

On the side-lines of the UN General Assembly session, Sharif will participate in an energy conference which will also be attended by the premiers of Norway and Denmark.

The conference will explore ways to acquire energy through non-conventional sources.

Along with the US vice president and Japanese prime minister, Sharif will co-chair a peace conference which will review cooperation among international peaceful friends.

Sharif will also participate in a meeting on reforms in the UN and will underline the need for harmonising the UN Security Council with new global demands.

Before leaving for Pakistan on September 27, the premier will also visit New York with an entourage of fourteen people.
