A petition was filed in the Supreme Court’s Lahore Registry on Saturday, seeking Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar’s disqualification under article 62 and 63 of the Constitution.
The petition was filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Gohar Sindhu.
He stated in the plea that a single bench and two member bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) had rejected petitions seeking the prime minister and the interior minister’s disqualification, whereas, both have lied to the parliament regarding army’s role as a mediator.
Nawaz Sharif and Chaudhry Nisar do not fulfill requirements of article 62 and 63 of the Constitution because they have misled the nation, he added.
Sindhu said both have violated their oath, thus, court should nullify the LHC’s verdict and disqualify both of them.
It may be mentioned here that Nawaz Sharif and Chaudhry Nisar both told the parliament that the army had stepped-in to end political standoff between the government and protestors at the behest of Imran Khan and Dr Tahirul Qadri – a claim that both Imran and Qadri denied.
Afterwards, army had issued a clarification stating that the government had requested Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif to play role as a mediator to end political crisis.
