Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader Sher Alam Farooqi was shot Sunday in Tor Gundai area of Doaba in District Hangu.
Police said that unidentified gunmen sprayed bullets at Farooqi, killing him on the spot.
Police and other law enforcement agencies personnel have cordoned off the area and started a search operation.
Later, JUI-F Information Secretary Jalil Jan said that armed men opened fire on Farooqi outside his residence, killing him on the spot.
The 55-year-old Farooqi had graduated from Haqqania Madrassa and was the deputy ameer of Tehsil Thall of District Hangu.
Farooqi was a close associate and class fellow of JUI-F provincial president Gul Naseeb Khan.
The JUI-F has held the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government responsible for Farooqi’s death, stating that the KP government has failed to protect citizens.
Meanwhile, Jamat Islami General Secretary Shujaul Mulk said that the provincial government was not serious in controlling the law and order situation and incidents of targeted killings and kidnapping for ransom were continuing unabated.
