A large number of students and teachers of Karachi University (KU) took out a rally against the killing of Dean of Faculty of Islamic Studies, Dr Shakil Auj, on Thursday and demanded immediate arrest of killers.
Dr Shakil was ambushed by unidentified bike riders near Baitul Mukkarram Mosque on Mian University Road in the limits of Aziz Bhatti police station on Thursday when he was on his way to Khana-e-Farhang to attend a ceremony organised in his honour.
A wave of sorrow and anguish spread in the campus after receiving the shocking news. Teachers at the KU and other universities of Sindh suspended academic activities to mourn the assassination of their colleague.
University of Karachi will remain closed for next three days. All examinations scheduled to be held on September 19 to 21 have also been postponed. New dates for the papers would be announced later.
Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan took notice of the incident and directed the Sindh inspector general of police (IGP) and the Karachi AIGP not to leave any stone unturned in bringing the culprits to book and to submit him a report of the incident.
Karachi Police Chief Ghullam Qadir Thebo has formed a six-member investigation team under Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) East, Munir Ahmed Sheikh, to probe into the murder of Dr Shakeel and Rs 2 million rewards had also been announced for any information which may lead to the arrest of killers.
Sindh Education Minister Nisar Ahmed Khuhro also condemned the sad incident. Jamaat-e-Islami Sindh chapter chief Dr Merajul Huda Siddiqui also condemned the killing of senior teacher.
