Court orders case against Sharifs, ministers over PAT men’s killing

Accepting Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT)’s petition against killings of PAT workers, Islamabad District and Sessions Court Monday ordered registration of FIR against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, federal cabinet ministers and IGs of Punjab and Islamabad on murder and terrorism charges.

PAT had submitted a petition in District and Session Judge Raja Jawad Abbas’s court under Section 22-A, seeking case registration against high government officials over the killings of protesting workers in Islamabad’s Red Zone on August 31.

During case proceedings, Secretariat Police submitted a report stating that PAT protesters intended to occupy sensitive buildings in the Red Zone while Islamabad Operations SSP Asmatullah Junejo had been badly injured in the protesters’ attack.

The police claimed that the case had already been registered on behalf of the state as PAT’s complaint was received after four days of the incident. He added that names of those injured or killed were not mentioned in PAT’s complaint.

Furthermore, defence lawyer Chaudhry Abdul Aziz stated that the capital administration had only issued no objection certificate (NOC) for Aabpara, however, PTI and PAT violated it and entered the Red Zone, pelting stones at the police and breaking Parliament’s gate and fences.

On the contrary, petitioner Umar Riaz Abbasi’s lawyer Ibrar Raza told court that the defence lawyer was trying to divert court’s attention with his “flimsy stories”. He said the protesters were peaceful but the police opened fire, killing two PAT workers and injuring dozens others on the orders of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.

“We submitted a request in the Secretariat Police Station for registration of case, however, police did not take any action,” he added.

After hearing arguments, the court ordered the police to register case against the Sharif brothers, Interior Minister Nisar, Railways Minister Saad Rafique, Defence Minister Khwaja Asif, Islamabad IG, Railways IG, Islamabad commissioner and other high officials.
