Punjab govt sets up flood relief fund

As many as 750 students of different medical universities are working voluntarily to provide relief to the flood victims while 90,000 patients have been examined in the area, said Punjab Minister for Environment and Protection Shuja Khanzada while briefing journalists after attending the Flood Control Cabinet meeting at Civil Secretariat on Saturday.

He announced the setting up of a chief minister’s flood relief fund.

Khanzada said that water from River Chenab had caused a colossal damage in the Punjab.

He said the government had provided food to 70 percent flood victims across the province, adding that 10 water plants had been installed in different areas while more would be put in place to provide clean drinking water to people.

Regarding malaria and dengue, the minister said that steps were being taken to protect the masses from the diseases.

Two breaches were made to save Multan and Muzaffargarh, he added.     PML-N leader Zaeem Qadri paid tributes to the Pak Army for its efforts to rescue flood-hit people.

Floods have caused a damage of about Rs 100 billion, as a large area was affected by flood while hundreds and thousands of people were affected, he added.

He said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif daily visited the areas to know about problems of people while Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif also spent twenty hours a day in flood-hit areas.

He said that those making celebrations in sit-ins had not realised problems of flood-hit people.
