- ECP expresses reservation over NA Secretariat’s method to accept PTI MNAs’ resignations
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Thursday expressed its reservations over the method adopted by the National Assembly (NA) Secretariat to accept the resignations of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) parliamentarians.
In a statement, the ECP has objected to the acceptance of resignations on varying dates instead of accepting all resignations on the same date, which has created “constitutional complexities”.
The ECP said that “constitutional complexities” occurred with acceptance of PTI President Javed Hashmi’s resignation on August 18, because the by-elections had to take place within 60 days of vacation of the seat.
“The commission is of the view that the constitutional timeframe is reduced if the resignations are accepted in the previous dates, urging the Secretariat to accept resignations on the dates the notification is issued instead of the previous dates,” the statement added.
